She dexterously contrasts the stark blackness of these horrible truths with the saving grace of much more gentler forces like forgiveness, love that spans across boundaries of gender or race, the innocence of children, the unrelenting promise of pacifism, and, above all, the power of altruism as the guiding force for human harmony. Gibson juxtaposes two opposing images of mankind: one as a monstrosity that employs indiscriminate violence to satisfy its bottomless greed under the guise of religious convictions, and the other a creature capable of breathtakingly profound descriptions of the specificity of things, both internal and external, that make the human race such a beautiful species, one that harbors more potential for compassion than it is capable of realizing.
Her poems speak with the breath of human life by painting portraits of people, things, and emotions with a crafted realism. Besides being a poet, Andrea is an activist who urges us not only to be aware but also to work for change.

Armed with a clear voice and a slew of bitter truths, Gibson marches forward to join the ranks of my favourite living poets. They stand alongside Atwood, Kaur, Lovelace, and Shire- and the revolution will be televised. Andrea Gibson was the first spoken word poet I followed. It was she who drew me to the beauty of spoken word poetry and slam performances. I have been wanting to read one of her books for a long time, so imagine my delight to finally read one.

These gut-wrenching poems are so freaking beautiful. I had to remind myself to breathe while holding back tears in awe of what I was reading. I love the descriptiveness, the rhythms and cadences It felt empowering and cathartic, even in the toughest moments, because they GET it. I'll be reading more as in, everything by Gibson now. Jan 13, Jolene rated it it was ok Shelves: shorts , quick-reads , published , I bought this after reading the first poem in the bookstore and loving it. Unfortunately, it was the best one. Many of the others were too on the nose for me--perhaps because they're meant to be performed.
Apr 22, Schuyler Peck rated it it was amazing Shelves: books Andrea Goddess Gibson, is there anyone better? The answer, as you come to finish her book, Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns, is no. This book of poetry and art is radiant. Never have I felt a person so express themselves in who they are and what is important to them, than the heart that Andrea leaves on her pages. This is powerful work. She details life in a way that is felt so deeply, I'm both afraid and excited to go out in the world and try to experience it too.
This is love and heartbreak bleedi Andrea Goddess Gibson, is there anyone better? This is love and heartbreak bleeding on both pages. To anyone looking to feel, whether that means to be angry, passionate, love-struck, or to come to tears by words, this is what you've been looking for. Mar 19, Katie rated it it was amazing Shelves: xxread-in I've never been one for poetry. I'm a very literal person and lofty metaphors go way over my head "Animal Farm wasn't just about animals?
Andrea Gibson's stuff, however, is raw and accessible. She talks eloquently about causes I hold dear and ones I didn't even know existed. This is an excellent book. Dec 21, Kaylie rated it really liked it Shelves: queer , poetry. Gibson wrecked me with these poems, as they always do--there were so many to pause over and chew through, to cry about or send to loved ones.
I think Gibson's later work is much stronger, but I only know that because I've read their work out of one of the most excellent things about reading through a poet's catalog is that you can watch their growth. I think Gibson's later work is much stronger, but I only know that because I've read their work out of order--this is a collection full of gut-punches, stand-out poems, and brilliant brutal love.
